Akiko Yosano's Tangled Hair

ree

This new selection from Akiko Yosano's Tangled Hair by Tangerine Press introduces one of the most famous and controversial poets in Japanese literature to a contemporary audience of readers. The 90th anniversary edition features artwork by Kotaro Chiba, and an afterword by Adelle Stripe.

First translated into English by Shio Sakanishi in 1935, it is a landmark work in 20th century Japanese poetry that includes tanka from the original collection in 1901, and short free verse poems from later publications added by the translator.

Handbound by Michael Curran in his New Malden workshop, the two editions are available to pre-order as numbered and lettered copies, signed by the artist and afterworder. Tangled Hair is bound in cloth-covered acid-free boards, with conservation glue and hemp cord; and a foil embossed front cover artwork. A paperback edition will be available in 2026.
