Nul si découvert

ree

An exclusive short story - set in the Shoreditch years - by Adelle Stripe appears in Nul si découvert, a new book about Ivan Smagghe by his friends and collaborators.

Born in 1971, Ivan Smagghe was raised in the Parisian suburbs, and has been a DJ since 1996. A Radio Nova host, journalist here and there, co-founder of Kill The DJ and other labels and club nights, he is a music producer when he chooses to be - but never out of obligation. Since 2005, he has lived in self-imposed exile in London.

As Smagghe often says, cinema is his life - and what has saved him more than once. Which is why he didn't simply write a book; he directed one. "Dir." as the cover announces: a cast of many voices, yet ultimately speaking as one. Known as a DJ, a journalist, a curator of records, Smagghe is here a curator of memories - fragments told by others, as if summoned by his call: "Write me." Images gathered, scattered, and stitched together. Nul si découvert is not an autobiography but a book of perspectives, a book that lives between the lines. Beneath its stark, minimal cover lies a quiet charge of emotion, waiting for the reader to decode. Never underestimate the reader. When asked to tell his story, he did — in his own way, as always. Smagghe is never where you expect him to be. Neither is his book.
